I dont care enough about politics. Most likely wont affect me personally, the world is still gonna be shit if we are independent or not.

I don't know much about the Scottish economy, but doesn't it rely on a large grant from the UK?

Though even if this does happen in 2014, I'm guessing it'll be a few years before there's any real difference outside of being able to say Scotland is independent. There a whole host host of issues that'd need to be dealt with right after. It'd be far from a clean split. Even simpler stuff like passports. And I'm guessing Scotland would want to join the EU, which most likely means joining the Euro currency too and that's a sinking ship. I'd take the British Pound over the Euro any day of the week.

I also don't know much about the Scottish economy or culture, but I agree with Jak. If Scottish were to separate from the UK, they would be severed from the huge financial centers in England and the purchasing power of the British Pound. That would led Scotland to either adapt a new currency, which would be weaker than the Pound or Euro, or they join the EU and adapt the Euro and we all know Euro is not doing that great at moment or in the near future.

Ck, this is your chance to directly participate in your democracy for an issue that you care about. Don't be so cynical. The world is in one of the most peaceful states it has ever been in all of human history. It's really not that bad.

But I do agree with Jak and Open. Europe is in a bit of a pickle right now, and incorporating a new state in to the pact would be difficult in the current situation.

From what I know, Scotland doesn't have that many industrial areas and it'd have to import a lot of raw materials. This in turn would make it subject to a heavy amount of British/American/Chinese power.

In addition, the US and UK military bases in Scotland would prove troublesome diplomacy-wise as there would still be a British presence on Scottish soil. I doubt that they're going to want to move.

I have almost 2 years to properly research it and think about a decision anyways.

I do know one thing though, there are countries alot smaller than our own in Europe surviving just fine on their currency and have less of a tourism pull than Scotland does. Never mind the fact that the vast majority of the north sea oil belongs to us too and would still belong to us if we weren't part of the UK.

You can guarantee that'll be the biggest part of all this. Who gets the oil. I'm certain the UK will fight tooth and nail for it. Like I said, it'll be a very, very messy split.
Early days though. A lot will have to be debated over. I do believe that if Scotland did join the EU (I can't imagine they wouldn't), they'd most likely have to take on the Euro. The legal side of that has always been hazy but I've no doubt our German friends will "insist" on it.
I can't see a newly created currency could possibly survive in the current worldwide economy. It'd be incredibly difficult to maintain but who knows what'll happen in the next 2 years.
