Yeah Spidey is dead. There's 2 big universes with Marvel. Well, more but these are the two main ones.

616, which is the original and Ultimate, which they tend to take more risks.

In 616 universe, Parker is all grown up and I believe a teacher or scientist.
While in Ultimate he was still about 15 or 16, the same age 616 Parker was when he started out.

Difference is 616 didn't die...

Ok, so it's better than I expected. They seem to be rebooting the whole universe back in something awesome.

http://www.comixology.com/ is where I get my mine from. I believe it's an app too but you can read it on a PC or laptop too. They're now releasing the same day as print copies too.

If you decide to read anything, read Ultimates 1, then Ultimates 2. Great start off points and probably my favorite two comic arcs in years. After that, things get messy so maybe jump up to the new stuff that's out now.

I'd really recommend Ultimates though. 1 and 2. Fleshes out the Universe.
One thing to remember about comics like these, they never stay self contained. You can guarantee they'll all mix together at some points. Best thing to remember is you can't keep up to date with everything all the time. But it's not that big a deal.

One major thing you should know. A few years back something called Ultimatum happened in the Ultimate Universe. Long story short, Magneto went bat shit crazy and with the help of Thors Hammer, fucked up the world pretty bad.

At the end of it all, a huge amount of characthers died. Daredevil, Magneto, Doctor Doom, 99% of the X-men including Wolverine and so on. After this the Government went and made it illegal to be a mutant. If you are, you're taken away and put into camps. Hence the Xmen, what was left, died away. Till now.

so before i make the purchase

i should start with ultimates 1 which is 14 issues then move on to ultimates 2

Exactly. They help set up the characters you'll see most often. They say it's what the new films took most inspiration from. For example, making Nick Fury look like Samuel L. Jackson.

There is an Ultimates 3 that sets up Ultimatum, but it's pretty horrible since it's done by Jeph Loeb. Even the art is bad. They say it and Ultimatum fucked up the whole universe popularity for a long time.
Honestly, avoid Jeph Loeb at all costs.

It's only now, after re-branding it "Ultimate Comics" instead of just "Ultimate" and starting fresh with the new Spiderman, X-men and new Ultimates, that it's getting back to being as awesome as it once was.
